Gatorade, for the Athlete Wannabe

Hi folks, today we are introducing a new format – video. Here is the inaugural episode of the Fooducate Show. Please let us know what you think!

Get Fooducated

  • http://twitter.com/Jambutter Rob Smart

Like video because it makes the products more real seeing them in your hand, etc. Suggestions: (1) better background, (2) when showing things up close, make sure we can actually read them. Good luck!

    • guest

      What Rob said…

Have a better background than a bright light off to the right side of the image.

Don’t have the camera looking up at your face, have it even with your face or slightly above.

Have a script, or at least practice getting rid of “like” and “Um” in your speech.

Deliberate anunciation of your entire sentences. When you were summing things up or working through the middle of sentences, you would speedupyourspeechsothingsblurredtogether.

Overall, a decent first crack at a video.  I like the periodic video inserted in the blog, but keep up the written portion as well.

  • Joline Atkins

I LOVE IT! I do videos often for my fitness biz. Thanks! It was/will be GREAT to hear you!

  • http://www.rainbowplate.com Janet Nezon

Thanks Hemi! I like the video format. It feels as though I’m finally meeting you in person!  I wouldn’t do away with the blog, but it is a great way to broaden your reach.  Keep up the great work that you do!!

  • Cemclean

Video isn’t a convenient format for me.

  • Anonymous

I like the idea of video but it isn’t very convenient. I read this blog while on breaks at work and videos don’t work with our system.

  • Lauri (RedheadRecipes.com)

I personally prefer reading blogs, but the occasional video is nice too I guess.

I agree, gatorade is bad stuff!! Unfortunately, marketing has SO many people convinced that we need to ‘replace our electrolytes’! I had  fourth grader ask me about replacing their electrolytes the other day after I told her gatorade was bad for her bc of all the sugar! I often see people WALKING with a botle of gatorade… a little counterproductive don’t ya think! I personally put gatorade, soft drinks, and juice all in the same ‘sugar water’ category!

  • Tess Bond

Have you considered making the video a podcast?  That way, I can subscribe and get it automatically downloaded to my phone.  :)

  • sara

I do not like videos since I often read blogs in places where I am unable to listen to sound… therefore, I can’t watch this post today :-(

  • Arjuna2323

I look forward to reading your blog every single day!
Unfortunately I cannot watch video due to low connection speed.
    Back to print, please!

  • Scott

Great idea, but I prefer print.  I track your page through RSS and like to read it in the break room and in other public places.  Print format allows me to do that on the sly. Video, not so much.

  • Shana

Awesome idea, but I usually read the blog in between quiet moments in class, I can’t sit and watch video until i’m home :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/kenleebow Ken Leebow

Great idea … nice complement to the blog. One suggestion: 86 the bright light behind you.

  • waterbugg08

I like the video idea, but I see problems with it. A lot of people seem to enjoy reading your blog on the sly at work or at school, and video does not allow for that. I agree with Tess, a podcast would be a great idea, and to keep the blog up at the same time for those that cannot do a podcast.

  • http://www.UrbanOrganicGardener.com Mike Lieberman

Like the video. Think you should do a video and text hybrid. Each format will speak to different audiences. Great job on the first one!

  • Monica

Like many others, I think if you’re going to do video, you should do both video AND text. I personally hate watching videos. When I find a video on a subject that interests me I usually just google the subject to look for the same info in print form.

  • http://www.betterhealthtoday.co Kay Wilson

I do like the video idea, but I am a blog reader and blog also on better health today & gardening, so I prefer reading blogs, maybe with occasional video….

  • Cartoonguy_99

Video thumbs down. I can scan a blog in 10 seconds to find info.

Unfortunately your info is false. Sugar is not a bad thing during and post exercise, which is what Gatorade was designed for. If it’s treated like Kool Aid, then yeah, you don’t need it. Spend some time on Pubmed and learn a little about exercise science and nutrition before posting about something you don’t fully understand.

  • Barb

I don’t like video.  Too noisy, and I can read much faster.  I do not watch any news/blogs on video – I don’t return to the site.  Please return to print.  I won’t see today’s posting.

  • http://paladinoftheweb.myopenid.com/ Joshua Carmody

Echoing the thoughts of others, I generally don’t watch videos unless their really important to me, because they take much much more time than reading, and because I can’t listen to sound when at work, or when on a train, or when carpooling, or when other people are playing video games in the same room, or…(whenever).

If you end up continuing to do videos, I certainly hope they don’t take the place of your text content.

  • Rmnamb

Can’t do a video next to my sleeping babies

  • Achim Thiemermann

    Hi Hemi,
I would enjoy an occasional video post, but then, if possible, with a transcript. Reading your valuable info allows me to digest it at my own pace, rather than trying to keep up with your visual presentation. Also, sometimes it takes a re-read or two for my better understanding. That’s a bit clumsier with video. I guess it depends on the topic. Complex stuff is (for me) easier to grasp when I see it in written form.
    Thanks for all you do,
    Chef Keem

  • Smallburger

i prefer to read. i find the whole vlog thing kinda creepy. i know i would feel stupid doing, so i assume the person in front of the camera feels just as stupid. much nicer to hide behind the keyboard.

  • Eva

sorry takes too long to watch the video
I typically skip all the news stories that are video too – it’s nice that some of us still like to read!

  • Ceotterness

I live in the country and love fooducate, but my internet is slow and limited.  I don’t watch videos.

  • GUEST

Like most of the others, I prefer written format.  I don’t like waiting for videos to load, with my slow internet connection, and also I always read your blog while my son falls asleep, so I need quiet.  If everything is video only, I won’t be able to visit :-(

  • Carlagolden

I personally would rather read. Could you do both (text and video) in each post? Is that too much to ask?

  • Carrie

I read all the blog posts but I don’t think I will watch another video. I would much rather read and don’t have time to watch videos. A big thumbs down for the video format. Please stick with a written blog. Thanks.

  • Laurie

I do rather read my blogs but the video was well done and to the point.  I only get Gatorade as a treat occasionally when my boys play baseball but no more.  I should have looked closer….everyone talks about those electrolytes that we need to replenish…can’t believe I bought that one!  Thanks.

  • Mariemclin49

I prefer to read the information, but I really liked the video and hope you continue to do them. Sometimes it is nice to get visual information.

  • Christi

I really enjoyed the video, but I actually prefer the written format.  If you wanted to occasionally include a short video (that sums everything up) embedded into the written article, that would be nice too, although not really necessary and more work for you.  Thanks for all you do to ‘fooducate’ us. ;)

  • mom of 3

I usually learn a lot in 20 seconds or so when I read your blog.  The video took much longer to share the same info, and I won’t usually have that much time to dedicate.  However, this particular topic (Gatorade) and this video format work well to try to reach my tween son.  Of course he isn’t a regular follower of this blog, but I’m going to have him watch this particular post…

  • Butacup425

    Both work for me ;)
    Thanks Fooducate!

  • Thelunchlady

I love your blog. You cover many timely topics. However, I do not like the video format. I use many of your posts as starting points for some parts of my training sessions. If you are going to have the videos, please add a transcript.

  • Babs

Ditto…..I read faster than a video runs and I feel I get much more out of it.  Great video tho…I just prefer the written blog.

  • Rff1613

If this is how it’s going to be consider me unsubscribed. Plenty of other info out there.

  • jose gomez

Excelente idea!! y si le agregas el post escrito mucho mejor…
Gracias por tu trabajo Hemi !!

  • http://www.brambleberry.com/ Anne-Marie

I’m a big fan of the written word as well =) I love reading what you have to say, not so much watching it.

  • Mdeva

I can read as fast as my lips allow, but videos always goooooooooo toooooo sloooowly.

  • Shannon

Much, much prefer the written format. Having just a video means I’ll unsubscribe.

  • victoria

i prefer to read, as well. though it was nice to put a face to the amazing person who has started this sensation of consumer education!

  • Soccer Mom

I prefer the written format, although an occasional video might be nice to insert for variety.  The written format allows for more detailed information.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1643748779 Lana Zimprich

Do both (like Mercola), that way everyone is happy. ;) I prefer and need to read at times (when I can’t listen to a video), as others already mentioned.

  • Colin (UK)

I too prefer the written reports, I can speed read far quicker than the pace of a video. Please can we have text.

  • Le Ki

Interesting topic, would’ve loved to know your thoughts on it, but I HATE trying to watch videos for info. If you must post videos as entries, can you also post a transcript?

  • Jmn

I won’t watch the videos, so if you keep them up I’ll switch to reading other food blogs… Otherwise, I quite like your blog!

  • Jmn

  • Donaldjmiller

there is no advantage in receiving info on video vs text–its a negative–takes 4 seconds to read the same info he gave in 2 minutes-don’t need to see him drink a glass of water etc.

  • Belvey

I agree with the majority of the comments, I prefer to read the blog, not listen….both versions would be better and give us a choice.

  • bob666

Video is good, a bit short and lacking in details.. so longer, more details/infomation about the product

  • Julie

Hi – love your blog but don’t have time to listen to the video – much prefer to scan and read.  Thanks but keep the written format coming

  • Eht623

Love the new format! Think that it is very user friendly for sharing :)

  • Jamie

Like many other working moms and dads, I’m pressed for time and print is eaier to digest quickly–no pun intended. :)  Keep up the great blog!

  • http://twitter.com/ChefMikedotca Chef Mike Benninger

Sorry Hemi, I prefer the written format. Take a few more shots at it, you will get better at it the more you do it, but i really prefer your written posts.

  • Dave

Video is best used when you need to really show or demonstrate something. If it’s just a talking head piece like this, I think you’re better off with a written format. Thanks for all the great work. Keep it up!

  • Chefpaul

Your doing great work. Kids are marketed to in so many ways and they think Gatorade is good for them because they see athletes in the commercials drinking it. Good video format

  • http://twitter.com/moving4wellness Bobby Fernandez

I love the format.  I really think you should contact Sean Croxton at sean@undergroundwellness to collaborate and help the movement along.  He’s a master at “Edutainment” as he calls it on his YouTube site of over 40,000 subscribers.

  • Easydefault

I dont like the video format, please change back!

  • Jess

Not a bad idea to supplement the blog, but I prefer the written blog because that’s something I can print out and share if needed.

  • Bethjanek

Don’t like the video presentation as well.

  • Dahling

I like the video, and but can see why others prefer the written word.  Keep up the good work.

  • Scanlon Kristina

As someone that doesn’t check my email every day, I think it’s nice to have a video in there to break up the monotony of reading message after message after message. I do like being able to save the written format, but I’m a fan of the video…

  • FreedFred

i prefer the video. In the evenings after work, I’m sometimes too tired to read. By listening, I get this great information.

  • Jrnniferlgoodrich

Very easy to understand this way and easier on the eyes than reading the blog posts :) thanks!

  • Brian Schiller Uml

I moved the video format. Very attention grabbing and informative. Keep it up!
