Waking up to a world without Steve Jobs

October 6th, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

Sad to wake up to a world without Steve Jobs this morning. The San Francisco Bay area and tech community are in mourning. His passing is being compared to the deaths of Kennedy, Elvis, and Lennon. The legacy no less than that of Thomas Edison or Henry Ford.

Steve Jobs made the world a better place.

He inspired countless others to try and make the world  a better place too. Fooducate would not exist if Jobs and the Apple team hadn’t invented the iPhone 4 years ago.

From a commencement speech Jobs gave at Stanford a few years ago:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life…

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.

And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

I followed his advice. I decided to leave a cushy executive position to start Fooducate and change the way the world eats. It’s still too early to tell if we will succeed, but Steve Jobs inspired me to follow my passion and do the best to make it happen. And for that I am eternally grateful.

May he rest in peace.

Nicely put, thanks. Yes, a sad day.

My sentiments, exactly. Sad day, indeed.

“No one has ever escaped it.” Something else he was wrong about.

I loved that Stanford speech (a TED talk if anyone is interested). Well done Hemi, you’re doing a great job. As sad as it is (and it is) we all have to ask ourselves if the way we are spending our time is really as it should be. We also cannot wait until our health is suffering to make changes. We need to act now.

Here at home we are sad, also, Hemi. Yet even as I mourn our loss I am grateful for all that Steve gave us, including the gift of connecting with you now via my iPhone. During chemotherapy, I was blessed with receiving the amazing gift of my MacBook. And with it, came the capacity for me to pursue the very same creative endeavors which Steve envisioned when he materialized his ideas for Apple. And among the many things I did with my tool, was research alternative therapies for cancer – which are very much centered around NUTRITION. This is how I found Fooducate and with my heart in my hands, I thank you Hemi, for YOUR contribution to making us better people, and for taking the time to share a sincere and personal note of gratitude for Steve.
