Love this picture – but where’s the cafe au lait? That’s my new favorite as I find espresso too strong.

    • Stan

A cafe latte is espresso with steamed milk, and a cafe au lait is coffee with steamed milk. Moron.

        • Wishyouwerehere1901

          That’s what espresso is. Moron.

Espresso is European coffee, as in cafe latte. Cafe au lait refers to American coffee, aka drip filter coffee.

Espresso refers to how the coffee bean is processed (aka roasted) and extracted. The Coffee Bean can come from anywhere. European verses American is not an accurate statement. Cafe au lait is not considered an espresso drink as it is brewed coffe and steamed milk aka Cafe misto as Starbucks calls it. I do believe that coffee was orginated in Africa not Europe. Just about every country has espresso and coffee drinks.

No it doesn’t. At all. Espresso refers to the brewing method: forcing near-boiling water, under pressure, through finely ground roasted coffee beans. Any coffee bean or roasting level can be used to make espresso. Also, processing is not synonymous with roasting; they are completely separate steps on the coffee bean’s journey from tree to cup.

not sure of this a capp and a latte look the same, latte usually more milk.

    • Zijori

I am a barista and the ingredients are the same, but the amounts and the technique are different. With a latte, you make the shots and steam the milk then pour the shots in the milk with a little foam on top. The cappuccino is essentially the same but you pour the shouts in the glass first then the milk. Also with the cappuccino, you dont hold back the foam on the top of the steam like you do with a latte so you get more of an airy flavor.

    • Jordan

This is correct (7year barista here :) in a cappacino you milk foam ratio is 50/50 where as you only want just about 1/2 an inch foam on your late. As shown above, although you do have to look closely

the espresso macchiato is wrong, the milk foam goes in first, then the espresso. Macchiato means “stain” and its called a macchiato because the coffee “stains” the milk when you pour the espresso on top of the milk, not the other way around. Sorry it bugs me haha I own a few coffee houses

      Lol love this comment

I just realized… You coffee guys are a bunch of assholes. Arguing over what steps are in making a coffee drink, really?

  • Carolee1945

    Loved the clarity of this!

“Espresso macchiato” is actually correct as it is: first coffee and then either milk foam (macchiato caldo – warm) or cold milk. I am Italian and I know my coffees, ;) [Macchiato means "coffee stained with milk".]
