Viva Italia!

Hi folks, a personal note today.

My wife and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary and are off to an extended weekend in Milan, Italy. Aside from having a few days sans kiddos, this will be an interesting opportunity to fooducate ourselves up close on the difference in food culture and shopping between the US and Italy.

Italian culinary culture has brought so much to the world, it is really exciting to get there to experience it from up close. Whether pasta, pizza, gelato, or a strong espresso, Italians know how to enjoy food. We’ll try to bring back some interesting insights and pictures from our discoveries.

If anyone has interesting suggestions for good food in Central Milan, please shoot away in the comments below.

Milan is boring for tourists, I’d suggest you take the train to Genova for a one-day trip. The city has the biggest historical center in Europe and is truly breathtaking.

Ups, I mean Genoa (in English)

For a quick lunch: right in the center of Milan, near Duomo in Via Santa Radegonda, you can grab a Panzerotto at Panzerotteria Luini (http://www.luini.it)
For a nice aperitif (with buffet): At 7 p.m. head to the Navigli zone (have Via Ascanio Sforza as a reference) and have a walk around (the canal system was designed by Leonardo da Vinci). Choose your favourite spot and enjoy the happy hour.

I have a gluten sensitivity, and I’ve heard that people who can’t eat US wheat products don’t have the same issues in Italy because they don’t genetically modify their crops to contain an insane amount of gluten. Do you know if this is true or just a rumor started by hopefuls like me?

There is a substantial rate of celiac in Italy, so much so that it is not uncommon to find a gluten-free menu in addition to the regular one at some trattorie.

You may (or must…) try http://www.paneacqua.com/ : tradition with a lot of intelligence, http://mannamilano.it/: traditione with a lot of creativity and http://nicolacavallaro.it/ asking not only for his creative fish but also for the ABC kitchen. I may introduce you to all of them, if you wish so. When do you plan to travel to Milan?@Dan_Lerner

If the ‘Blue Dolphin’ still exists, definitely go there. I had their food as a young child growing up in central Milano and it was one of my favorite memories from around there. And absolutely do not be scared by sidewalk gelato – it’s some of the best!

Milan is not a very fashinating city, you could visit it in one day. I suggest to do also tour in Tuscany (Florence, Pisa or Siena) or in Rome, but you need more days! :)

  • Francesco Nemesi

Make sure you go there for the best pizza in Milan (the world, imho).

Milan was where I also had the best pizza in the world. It was 40 years ago, and we arrived in Milan railway station after an overnight journey from London. Who would have thought that the most memorable pizza came from a wall oven in Milan station!
