The Beverage Industry is “Clear on Calories” – But Not the Other Crap in Soda

Have you seen the ridiculous commercial sponsored by the beverage industry? The one where Dr. Pepper, Coke, Pepsi, and SunnyD pat themselves on the back for having stopped deceptive labeling after 20 years?

For years, you’d buy a 20 fl oz bottle from a vending machine and guzzle it down thinking you are consuming only 90 calories. But the 90 calories are for 8 fl oz, a full bottle is over 200 calories. Big difference.

So at the behest of First Lady Michelle Obama, the industry is now providing calorie information for the entire bottle as well. Thanks folks, 20 years after nutrition labeling was instituted you’re finally providing the full calorie picture.

How about some more clarity about your products?

SunnyD – can you tell us about the carcinogenic effects of Yellow #5 you use to artificially color your “juice drink”?

Coke – what about that caramel coloring?

Pepsi – want to tell folks about the calcium leaching properties of phosphoric acid?

What to do at the supermarket:

If you want to truly make the right choice – skip the beverage aisle. Tap water is the way to go.

If they were clear on sugar content, people might think twice before drinking it. A picture is worth a thousand words … http://bit.ly/awEpYV

Picture is definitely worth a thousand words. Like this one (one of the advertisments in NYC subways, by NYC dept of health):

People will still drink this, I’m sure, but at least they KNOW what they’re drinking. And what are your thoughts on the Pepsi Throwback? I don’t drink softdrinks since they both taste horrible and always give me hiccups, but I know a lot of people who do drink that and wondered if it’s any better?

With regards to Pepsi Throwback…I don’t usually drink pop either. My New Year’s Resolution was to eliminate HFCS from my world. So when Throwback Pepsi came back I bought a case thinking it would be nice for those odd cravings I get for pop.

It doesn’t seem as sweet (thankfully). It also doesn’t make my mouth feel “furry” and oddly dry like regular pop. I still don’t drink more than 1 can every 2 weeks but it’s definitely not the same as the HFCS pepsi. At least not in Canada.

I definitely always skip the beverage isle…we only drink milk and water at home. Juice is a ‘party treat’ for the kids if at a bday party, etc. The more we consume ‘real’ whole foods, the healthier we’ll all be:)

Could not have said it better myself!

Ummm who’s being deceptive here? Pretty sure those bottles said 2.5 servings. Is multiplication too hard for you?

The funny thing is that when I have guests over and as them if they’d like something to drink and they say, “yes” and then ask what I have I usually stumble for a second and then have to say, “well, I have water”. I forget sometimes that people drink things other than water. In my house we have filtered tap water, organic milk, and sometimes orange juice.

Speaking of what else is in the sodas, what about the BPA lining in the Aluminum cans? Bipensol A (BPA) mimics the hormone estrogen and feminizes men, lowers fertility. How about What about the High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) that is used in the soda? HFCS is contaminated with trace amounts of Mercury and Mercury causes brain damage. What about Aspartame in the Diet Sodas? Aspartame is literally poison as part of it is methyl ester, or wood alcohol which of course can help lead to things like macular distrophy (blindness) and aspartame makes people more vulnerable to diabetes. How about the water that is mixed with the syrup? The water comes from public sources that have likely been fluoridated, meaning there is not only fluoride in the water, but between 100-350 other chemicals as well. Mmm, municiple tap water is so good for you…

There is very little evidence that caramel coloring presents any significant danger. See http://exm.nr/gkSX90
    You are being careless

An I-don’t-want-anymore-regulations citizen.  I’m quite amazed at how uneducated the public is about their  food/beverages.  What would it take for a person to do a little DIY and investigate.   No, instead we rely on government to institute regulations!   What a sad state of affairs when we need the government to tell us how to raise our children, and direct our food consumption.  Of course, blame the food industry, the beverage makers, whomever.   Why should we be expected to take responsibility for our actions.   It’s the government’s job to do that.   That’s why we are unemployed, over taxed, and over-regulated.  Figure it out yourself – a BIG MAC is not healthy – do you need Michele Obama to tell you that!
