Good News: More Shoppers Abandoning Beverage Aisles

The past 2 years have seen a decline in the beverage category, 3.1% in 2009 and  2.1% in 2008, according to Beverage Marketing Corp. The worst hit products are “value-added waters”, or what we like to call “sugar-water with vitamins”. For example, Coca Cola’s Vitamin Water took a 13% hit. The sales of classic soda pop were declining for the 5th straight year in a row.

So are people drinking less? Obviously not. But good chances are that many recession-hit consumers have discovered the low cost alternative right in their kitchen- tap water. The question that remains – will the uptick in the economy this year mean a return to eco-devastating, belly fattening liquid candies?

Let’s hope not.

What to do at the supermarket:

Kick the soft drink habit. Kick the any-purchased-drink habit. Don’t start a new habit for your babies and toddlers. Simply skip the beverage aisles at the supermarket.

Regular soda and other sugary drinks are of course the worst, but diet drinks don’t seem much better. Why consume (and pay for) creepy artificial ingredients if you don’t have to? BUT when I’ve tried to convince people I care about to stop drinking so much diet soda, it’s like talking to a wall… People think if it’s not directly making them fat, it must be fine. Depressing.
