Eating Healthy at the Airport: Mission Impossible?

With a fair share of travel in the past week to the annual Food and Nutrition Conference in Denver, we had an opportunity to examine airport fare. Unfortunately, most of the offerings are not much better than an average food court in a suburban shopping malls.

That’s a double downer – the food is both untasty AND unhealthy.

Not to mention the meals served on the flight itself (if at all served).

But every airport must have some hidden jewel, right?

Please share your favorite airport spot for decent food when traveling. If we get enough responses we’ll repost a list of top airport culinary destinations.

Of course, there’s always the option of bringing your own food from home. We didn’t see too many brown baggers at the terminal though.

As one who travels, eats healthy and develops menus for lots of people I had the unique opportunity to develop the menu at Burrito Beach in the American Airlines terminal at O’Hare airport in Chicago. Every time is pass through I get myself (for free!!) a burrito bowl. Fat free black beans, steamed rice, grilled chicken, salsa, maybe a touch of cheese and a big scoop of guacamole.
As one with insight to the perils of cooking in an airport I can assure you that this is a true gem. Everything is cooked from scratch. Guacomole from ripe avocados, beans soaked overnight and boiled everyday. Chicken that is not injected with any saltwater grilled from raw, not processed. Hand chopped tomatoes and the list goes on….

I found a definite gem in the Denver Airport about a month ago. Itza Wrap! Itza Bowl! is hiding around the corner from the shop side of the food-court on concourse B and offers grab and go wraps or subway style wraps and rice bowls.

The Detroit airport has a sushi place that’s actually pretty decent. I usually try and opt for a plain old grilled chicken sandwich and forgo the cheese/sauce … you can find them at most airport restaurants.
