How Many Calories in Your Thanksgiving Meal?

November 21st, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

With Thanksgiving just days away, a little reminder that our holidays are a great opportunity to gain weight if we’re not careful. Courtesy of Smoothfitness. Click on the picture to zoom in.

The sad part – this does not include any beverage. Even if you stick to plain old tap water, you’ll probably be drinking a glass of wine. Add 80-150 calories per glass. It also doesn’t include a scoop of ice cream on top of the pie (mandatory, no?)

What you need to know:

Aside from working off all the extra calories, what else can one do?

- Portion Control – you don’t need to eat everything to the full serving size.

- Alternative dish #1 – there’s no salad up in that picture – no reason not to fill up on some greens in a light vinaigrette.

- Alternative dish #2 - a nice broth or chicken consomme can both warm your bellies and fill them up so you’ll have less room for the rest.

- Most important – don’t worry! If you eat balanced meals and take care of your body, a big meal every once in a while won’t kill you. Just take it easy over the rest of the holiday weekend…

My parents are divorced so I normally have at least two very big meal every holiday if not more. I consider holidays cheat days personally. The key to not getting super full and being able to eat at all the gatherings is to start with micro portions. I get tiny bits of everything to try it. then go back for seconds if i really love something. Also eat a HUGE portion of salad. then I try very hard to not eat every type of desert. I don’t really like pumpkin pie or turkey so i save lots of room there. :D

i remind myself that there are LEFTOVERS, no need to eat everything at once.

I normally try to keep it lite on the appetizers to safe calorie room at the dinner. Have a happy holiday:)

I calculated and I will be using 15 tablespoons of butter in a meal for only two people! However, we expect it to feed us for a week… :)
I am making a bunch of delicious food, healthy and no, and I will eat until I am satisfied and give thanks that I can do so.

Why not also include information about food safety at holiday meals? Proper cooking temperatures, holding temperatures, cross contamination risks, etc?

The nutrition information may be somewhat helpful, but it doesn’t matter what you ate if it made you barf amiright?

I think all of these figures are inaccurate! 180 calories for a slice of pumpkin pie? That’s a wayyy smaller piece than a regular Thanksgiving diner would consume. And 150 for mashed potatoes? I can easily believe that a 1/4-1/2 cup serving of mash could contain 150 calories of just cream or just butter.
