Please Do Your Part to Join the Food Revolution

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, airing on ABC, has brought nutrition, health and culinary sciences into America’s living room. Love him or hate him, Mr. Oliver has a strong screen presence, a burning passion, and a proven track record of making things happen, as he did in the UK’s lunch system.

Although he is not the first fighting for reform in school lunches and changes in the modern food systems, he is certainly the highest ranking celebrity figure who is dedicating his life to this single mission. The reality show where he tries to transform the eating habits of an entire community is entertaining, educating, shocking, and most importantly a catalyst accelerating the “food revolution”.

With Michelle Obama’s efforts, the FDA’s low tolerance for food industry BS, and a diabesity epidemic ripping through the country,  perhaps we are on the cusp of the tipping point, a year which historians will look back upon and say “is when the US finally began to dig itself out of its own junk food grave.”

If the meals Jamie prepared on the show got you in the mood for some cooking, here are the recipes. (Notice how ABC got a tidy sponsorship fee from Green Giant, starting at recipe #6.)

In case you want to help nudge the revolution just a bit further, consider signing Jamie Oliver’s petition.

I honestly thought I would hate his show. Assumed it would be all alarmist-opportunist grandstanding to build the Jamie Oliver brand. To my surprise I found it to be just the opposite. Unlike so many before him who can only point out the problems, this guy is making an honest effort to try to educate and provide real solutions that can actually help ordinary people. He should be congratulated and supported for this effort.

I definitely agree. I think Jamie is doing a great thing as well as the first lady. Fixing what we are eating will help many and fixing how much we eat will help even more.

i loved it.. i liked seeing him work so hard to change his strategy each day to try to get approval. i also liked the realism of what he is facing.. it is not an easy task!

I’m hoping the tipping point is closer than ever.
Abraham Lincoln once said “With public sentiment, nothing can fail. Without it, nothing can succeed.”

To bring this to a reality TV format is a brilliant idea that will cause mainstream America to take a long hard look in the mirror and re-think what’s in their refrigerators. TV shows like this can open a new level of conversation on food issues across the country in a way that all the Michael Pollan books can’t.

I have not seen the show, although I have heard a lot about it and even watched a short trailer a few weeks ago. I think it is an interesting idea, but I do not believe it will be a tipping point. I say this because reality TV is mostly entertainment, which people watch and talk about but not really take to heart. The “conversation” I fear will be about “all those fat people” and not really about what everyone can do to address our obesity problems.

Kudos to Jamie for trying. A more interesting idea could be a mix between this show and Biggest Loser! Tell that to the network bosses :)

    A couple thoughts….

I loved the part where he shows the extruded chicken process and all I could think of was what was shown on this site. F’ing nasty.

The second is the commercials. God I’m glad I have a DVR but one I saw was for Ragu where they show a kid not eating his veggies and they’re saying that tomato sauce is a full serving of veggies. I’d so much rather see this on PBS or commercial free paid by a responsible company.

Three….I hope it was editing but it probably isn’t. The people of the community are so ass backwards and resistant to change.
