Oprah Helps Rebrand KFC – Giving Away Gazillions of Coupons for Grilled Chicken

The Oprah Winfrey Show has teamed up with Kentucky Fried Chicken to provide millions of us with coupons for a FREE chicken meal. It’s part of a push to healthify their very unhealthy menu. The downloadable coupon and Oprah exposure is a genius stroke.

The “healthier” offering is for grilled (not fried) chicken, along with sides and a biscuit. The only question – will KFC now become KGC?

What you need to know:

We crunched the numbers for you to see if the grilled chicken is substantially healthier. Comparing a fried breast to a grilled breast here is the lowdown:

Serving size: fried – 6 oz.  grilled – just 4.25 oz.   So even before preparation, we’re talking about a smaller portion.

Calories: 370 for fried, just half of that for grilled.

total fat: fried – 21 grams (35% of your daily value) vs just 4 grams for grilled.

Sodium: 1050 gr (almost half your daily maximum!) for fried, vs. 440 for grilled.

Keep in mind, these values are just for one piece. The coupon gives you 2 chicken pieces, plus 2 sides (average 150 calories a side), plus a biscuit that clocks in at 180 calories. Total calories for the grilled deal – 840, and that’s before soft drinks.

It’s free though, right?

PS – if you can’t resist the deals and the thought of  trudging through massive crowds at your local KFC seems like a fun way to spend an hour, bring a friend along and cut the calories in half. Bon Apetit.

Thank you for this calorie breakdown. I saw her announce this on the show (wow! good deal!) and thought, hmmm … the chicken may be grilled but that biscuit’s sure not. Ha! So tasty, though.

Love this article about KFC. Split the 840 in half- something the whole world needs to understand. It’s so simple…. yet sooooo effective.
