Obama On Peanut Butter Fiasco: FDA Needs Revamping

It’s a good thing the President’s daughter is a big peanut butter fan. In a TV interview with NBC, Barack Obama addressed the current Salmonella outbreak:

Obama said the agency’s failure to recognize and intercept the products was only the latest of numerous “instances over the last several years” in which “the FDA has not been able to catch some of these things as quickly as I expect them to catch.”

What you need to know:

This is one of the worst outbreaks in US history. Over 500 sick, 8 dead, and 800 products recalled. All from one processing plant in Georgia. Criminal investigations into the plant managers actions after being warned of sanitary problems.

Meanwhile, The FDA is understaffed and working with a steadily declining budget. It certainly has not fulfilled its role in protecting American consumers in this instance. As president Obama said:

“At bare minimum, we should be able to count on our government keeping our kids safe when they eat peanut butter,”

What to do at the supermarket:

Find alternatives to peanut butter products. Check the ingredient list for any peanuts, peanut butter, or peanut paste. Even if a product has not been recalled today, it may be tomorrow…
